inlays & onlays.
Dental inlays and onlays are pieces of porcelain or similar material that are used when old fillings need to be removed or replaced. An inlay is very similar to an actual filling in that it fits on the inside of the tooth where the old filling used to rest.
An inlay fits inside the cusp tips of the tooth and helps to protect the drilled out portion of the tooth. These can be either permanent or temporary depending on the treatment method your dentist chooses. An onlay fits over the cusps of treated teeth and fits on the top of the tooth to protect the area.
Those patients that need dental inlays and onlays are those that have old fillings that may have begun to crack or chip, separate from the tooth, or that have fillings that have new cavities beneath them. Generally, your dentist will remove the old filling and fit a new inlay or only over the area to protect it.
In some cases, these are permanent but in cases where more dental work is needed they may be a temporary fix until the tooth can be properly repaired..
